North Korea is preparing to welcome foreign tourists once again, signaling a major shift after years of stringent COVID-19 restrictions. The isolated nation plans to reopen tourism in its northeastern city of Samjiyon starting December, with potential expansion to other areas of the country, according to tour operators.
Koryo Tours, based in Beijing, confirmed that international travel to Samjiyon and potentially beyond will resume in December 2024. This follows the resumption of international flights to and from North Korea last year and a private tour by a small group of Russian tourists earlier in February. High-profile foreign visits, including that of Russian President Vladimir Putin in June, have also occurred.
Despite these developments, North Korea has remained largely closed to international tourists since 2020.
Koryo Tours expressed enthusiasm about the reopening, stating that their local partner will soon provide detailed itineraries and dates. The firm highlighted that the long-awaited announcement marks a significant moment for North Korean tourism.
The city of Samjiyon, situated near the Chinese border, has been undergoing substantial development. North Korea describes it as a “socialist utopia” featuring new apartments, hotels, a ski resort, and various commercial, cultural, and medical facilities. Recent changes in leadership saw the dismissal or demotion of senior officials over issues related to this flagship project.
KTG Tours also confirmed that travel to Samjiyon will be available starting this winter.
