BYD Atto 2 to Launch Globally: The Most Affordable Electric Vehicle Yet

BYD has emerged as a significant player in the global electric vehicle market, leading in plug-in vehicle sales and making substantial strides in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales. While Tesla surpassed BYD in BEV sales for the entire year, BYD excelled in the fourth quarter. Historically, BYD’s stronghold has been in China, where it has achieved impressive sales figures. To sustain its growth trajectory, BYD is increasingly focusing on expanding its presence in international markets.

A notable model from BYD that has gained traction in foreign markets is the Atto 3. This vehicle has become popular in Australia, parts of Europe, and various regions in Asia and South America. BYD is preparing to introduce a new model, the Atto 2, which may further bolster its market presence. The Atto 2 was recently unveiled in China, where it is known as the Yuan Up. In other markets, the Atto 3 is referred to as the Yuan Plus, illustrating the global naming conventions of BYD’s vehicles.

The Atto 2, based on BYD’s third-generation ‘e-platform 3.0,’ is expected to be offered in China as the Yuan Up. This model will measure 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height. Although specific details are still pending, regulatory filings indicate that the Atto 2 will feature a front-mounted electric motor with options for 94 BHP or 174 BHP. It will be equipped with BYD’s Blade battery, available in capacities of 32 kWh or 45.1 kWh, providing ranges of 300 km and 400 km respectively (approximately 186 and 249 miles, based on the Chinese CLTC test cycle).

In the UK, the Atto 2 is anticipated to be priced around £30,000, potentially offering a competitive edge against rivals such as the MINI Aceman, Jeep Avenger, and Volvo EX30, and positioning itself against the upcoming Vauxhall Frontera EV. The interior design of the Atto 2 is more traditional compared to the Atto 3’s distinctive cabin. It features a floating touchscreen with potential rotating display elements similar to those in the Atto 3 and Seal models. The dashboard includes a large digital driver’s display, while the center console boasts grab handles inspired by off-road vehicles like the Ford Bronco, complemented by a crystal gear selector with a design reminiscent of BMW’s style.
